Around the middle of the 18th century, material appeared in Switzerland, the name of which can be translated as "Swiss peas", swiss dot. It was a translucent cotton cambric in a small speck that could be embroidered or woven. Today, the concept of "Swiss polka dots" has expanded significantly and any fabric in a special small polka dots can bear this name.

Swiss dot is gradually gaining popularity, for example, it is quite organically taking root in the Empire style, which the ladies of the reign of Emperor Napoleon I loved so much, until, finally, in 1854, the name polka dot, which began to be called the traditional and familiar print, flickered for the first time in an American magazine in peas, small or medium in size.

By the way, this name had nothing to do with the dance of the same name - it was just that at that time the polka enjoyed unprecedented popularity, and cunning merchants added the name polka literally to nothing, which responded well to sales.

Since then, polka-dot fabrics have never gone out of fashion, and the formal border between the concepts of swissdot and polkadot has erased, although, strictly speaking, thin semitransparent fabrics and nets with embroidered or flocked dots are more likely to be referred to as “Swiss peas,” while polka dot more related to printed prints.
